Social Media Depression

ToxicRainbowsCvrSqIt’s interestng that a ‘new’ study conducted by psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania determined that use of social media sites like (and particularly) Facebook  causes …wait for it… depression.   No surprise there, but I say this is ‘interesting’ only because studies like this seem to have been coming out for years making these claiims.  I didn’t have to resort to another one to know first hand that social media is a big player in producing self doubt and loneliness, all I ever needed to do was get online and see it for myself.

The grasping, the vying for attention, the compulsive posting and commenting all screamed, “Look at me! Look at me!”.  It doesn’t take a degree in psychology to understand what is going on and to see that people are suffering and appear more alienated each day.

In my book, Toxic Rainbows, I talk quite about the detrimental effects of social media and it’s influence on our behavior. In my opinion, it is one of the first things many of us need to overcome before we can start making improvements in our lives.

My request to you as that you THINK hard about how you use social media and figure out if it’s providing you with a sense of fulfillment and joy when you log on and/or off. Contemplating your use is only the start and I encourage you to read my book and delve deeper. You owe it to yourself.

Best Self Help Books For Men

bestselfhelpbooks

We all know how difficult it is to get some men to do things like going to the doctor, admitting a mistake or…gasp…read a Self Help book!  I know this is a generalization, but just as women are known to be more intuitive, some men just don’t want to admit or show weakness by browsing the self-help section.  But the truth is that making those first steps at improving ourselves is a great sign of strength and an improvement in itself.

A wonderful list of the ‘Best Self Help Books For Men’ was compiled by self improvement website Upjourney and my choices along with my book, Toxic Rainbows was included on the truly inspired list.

From my review:

Lucio focuses on issues that both deceive and weigh heavily on men, perception and the expectations imposed on them by others.

The book takes on a philosophical and sociological approach steeped in reason in order to grasp, then overcome our self-imposed failings. Men may appreciate the no-exit approach to this self-help book and be eager for the challenge.

The book also gives a welcome opportunity for men to see how their hidden talents have been obscured and offers an opening to pursue their dreams in a fresh and energetic way that leaves little room for negative influence.

Connecting with what the author calls Creative Self Expression, the individual is then in a position to answer hard questions like, “What is my purpose?” and to finally understand how he controls the meaning and rewards offered in his life.

Intolerance is Hot Right Now

signHYPOCRICYsign
There’s a person I know, someone who I’ve admired for years–creative, passionate about life, engaging, fun, a joy.  But then I realized that nearly every moment she shares on social media has been of outrage and venomous hatred. It’s gone so far that she has even called for the death of people she does not agree with.

I’ve made a point of staying away from the mind-controlling echo chamber of thee main culprit of social media conditioning, an entity whose name I won’t mention, but the ferocity and number of people who’ve been effected by the programming seeps through nonetheless.

It’s this reactionary behavior and single-minded focus of what troubles some of us that was an inspiration for writing my book Toxic Rainbows. I found myself asking myself, How can I help? What can I do? How can I reach someone without triggering them or being shouted over? Writing the book was no different than writing a letter to someone in the hopes that you could express all of your thoughts and feelings without getting  interrupted. Now our hope is that the letters we write are read!

signTolerance

There are factors at work that are creating a much more polarized atmosphere than we would be experiencing if things played out naturally, without influences hammering away at us. Polarity exists, it’s never not been part of the world in which we live. There are things that occur, beliefs that people have and even fashion or styles that is just ‘not you’. But when we give our focus to what it is we don’t want in our lives or what we don’t believe in, we are actually empowering what we push against.

If you hate facial hair, nose rings or red hats, chances are you see those things ALL THE TIME and bring them more into your experience than if you would have just put your attention elsewhere.

But our problems right now lie, a bit outside of our polar differences in belief. It’s in our UNDERSTANDING and how we came to believe what we do.  Our intolerance and inability to reason did not just happen overnight. It has been a long, slow development that has been inflicted upon us.  We need to understand ourselves, not what outside influences tell us about who we are because if we don’t watch out, we will suddenly be telling our friends that we wish they’d die.

If these ideas resonate, I encourage you to read my book, Toxic Rainbows. I also encourage dialogue and questions.

Is Halloween the Only Day for Honesty?

MEtub01

Today is Halloween and it occurred to me that it is the one day where people honestly present themselves as something that they are not. Take a second to grasp this.  The rest of the year, we present ourselves how we want other people to perceive us. It’s really a costume party all year long with October 31st as the day designated where we can admit we’re in costume.

We style ourselves to speak for us. We dye our hair in ‘progressive’ colors so that it creates a perception. We wear red hats to let people know we are just like they are. We cover our faces at protests so other like-minded citizens can fall-in with us.  We wear goth finery and symbolic jewelry to clue in other occultists… I could go on.

Think of how much time we spend presenting an idea of who we are, all the while avoiding the real work of discovering who that person is for ourselves. In my book, Toxic Rainbows, I repeat over and over how important honesty is in self-transformation.  It’s one of the hardest things we face in life. We know that uncovering and addressing hidden pains and roadblocks is one of the most painful things we can do, thus making it one of the easiest things to avoid.

Now is the time to face your truth. Wipe the make-up off your face, quit looking for your ‘perfect angle’ and understand that the real you is not something that is there for everyone to gawk at. When you discover that inner spark, and many of you know what I’m talking about, you will know that my words are true and that what matters is understaning yourself which will lead to your PURPOSE.

Let’s take this day and commit to honesty and to digging deeper within ourselves to discover what truth really is.

Toxic Rainbows – Fall 2018 Release

ToxicRainbows Book
Toxic Rainbows coming in Fall 2018.

Toxic Rainbows is a book I had no intention of writing, but it came out of necessity.  It wrote itself after a few years of self-reflection and contemplation of how as a society we are to function spiritually in a world where spiritual transformation plateaus with a hollow meme or a proficiency at yoga.

I am a Generation X writer with the perspective of having experienced life pre- and post-internet. The remarkable experience for some of us was watching life unfold as a veil of delusion was constructed around us. We have the capacity for second sight because we can see the realities of two worlds, the truth and a manufactured delusion.

The delusion, often referred to as The Matrix, suffocated, obscured and redefined words and reality as we knew them. An ever creeping and pervasive artificiality and disconnection was my inspiration in seeking answers to life’s most enduring questions which led to my studying works of an esoteric nature, psychology, philosophy and religion.

Toxic Rainbows is based on my experience of growing up outside of a system we are now mired in, entering into it and finally extricating myself from it by understanding how I became a part of the system and how we had become enslaved by it.

Toxic Rainbows is a book about awareness and self discovery that offers revelations and sometimes unpleasant truth that pertains to everyone. It is a manual for escape and a guide for obtainng the joy and freedoms that are missing from so many of our lives. It’s an alternate route to a much better Oz, a place where true enlightenment can be obtained without fear of falling victim to the falseness that surrounds us or the trappings of the faux New Age.

Follow my blog for excerpts and news on the book release. I will also be posting updates to Instagram.

Toxic Rainbows, ebook releasing in Fall 2018.

Tech Devices: Our Self-Imposed Slavery

ENSLAVE

Modern day slavery exists and our captors care nothing of our race, gender, social or economic background. They are unmoved and non-biased. This is something I think about quite a bit and it doesn’t seem like one day can go by when I feel the screws tightening.

DSC03574 (1)Today in came in the form of an article about St. Louis University installing surveillance devices, 2,300 of them, into every dorm room for this coming semester. The devices, are of course marketed as ‘assistance’ tools that answer questions about the campus. Just like everything that is bad for us, we accept it because they’re ‘cool’ or we’re programmed into believing we ‘need’ them and they’ll ‘protect’ us. Eventually we don’t even notice they’re there because we never said “No.”.

These devices, naturally, are supplied by Am_zon and are Al_xa-enabled Ec_o Dots.  They claim that ‘no personal data is stored’, but they’ve had problems with these devices storing and using the data for advertising purposes in the past. And didn’t we just recently watch as Mark Zuckerberg purgered himself in front of the Senate’s Commerce and Judiciary committees–or at the very least deny things he was fully aware of?

zuck-data

I don’t like to bring up these kind of things, but this is what is being put in place to destroy our souls and take us further from understanding our purpose. It atrophies our minds and gives us no reason to think for ourselves. This is the enslavement that so many of us accept as normal or choose to believe that it doesn’t affect us.

Break the chains, disconnect from your devices, unplug, stop the streaming programming…or at least start paying attention to how much you rely on technology to do the thinking for you. Save your temple. Refuse to be the product.

Self Transformation Can Get Ugly

TRIGGEREDI have become fascinated by horror movies where people are transformed into monsters. The idea that a poison takes over or a contamination turns someone into a fiendish creature is an interesting theme for a movie, but the reality is that we are doing it to ourselves quite openly all the time.

Triggered. Child tantrums have made way for adult meltdowns and seriously low karmic behavior goes from the periodic to standard practice. We use labels and fear to justify our behavior, opt for selective outrage and express intolerance for anyone who refuses to take part in our rage.

Self Transformation and goals of attaining greater consciousness and atunement with Divine energy requires the type of self reflection and contemplation that results in clarity.  Without clarity and awareness, we can’t see or experience our actual reality and our emotions blind us and prevent us from experiencing equilibrium and happiness.

Maintaining balance in a world that appears designed to throw us off our game is not always easy even when we are fully aware of our triggers. Instinctively we yearn for balance. Tension, hostility, doubt, uncertainty, fear…all these things are byproducts of the misery brought on by a lack of balance.

It is a Law of Nature that if you express hatred and anger, that’s what you get more of in your life. It will even express itself in the way you look. We all owe it to ourselves to calm the beast within and understand that the real monsters are not exterior to us.

The image here is from the 80s horror film The Beast Within and the title should  be reflected on by anyone who struggles with responsibility and blame.

Your personal growth and self-transformation is going to take more than repeating a few inspirational quotes and jumping on a culty New Age bandwagon. It might get ugly before the rainbows and unicorns start appearing. But never fear, you are not alone.

Finding Yourself

DSC02677

We all want to understand our purpose and for most of us that will require a process of change and self transformation. Positive change will shake the effects of our influences and will bring about a greater understanding of our habits and motivations.

Lasting change is a process that includes a strong desire, dedication, reflection and will.

Your greatest first challenge is in understanding who you are. I am not talking about the labels that are imposed upon you by society. I’m talking about the inner you that only you can know.

Surviving the New Babylon first means finding yourself among the masses, extricating yourself and discovering the individual buried beneath the labels, peer pressure and expectations of others.

Discovering your true inner self means letting go of what you think you know and believe in and to simply start over.  That means spending time reflecting and in meditation. Giving time to youself and your thoughts alone.

You will begin to better understand your emotions and why you perceive things the way that you do. Connecting with your inner self, remembering things and making connections to your past will give you insight into why certain triggers can easily upset you or why some things put you in unusually good moods.

Reflection is a stage of work that will allow you to live with greater awareness. You will come to conclusions and make decisions more consciously, instead of allowing your inner conscious, or subconscious to make decisions for you. You will start to trust yourself more and believe in your intuition. Many wonderful things will start to happen, but you have to start laying the groundwork and that requires time and commitment.

I hope you will find some inspiration in this short post. There is a lot more to be said on the subject and I will continue posting on the process of self transformation regularly. This will also be covered in greater depth in my book, Post-Sanity: Surviving the New Babylon which will initially be released as an e-book. I am aiming for a Nov-Dec release, so stay tuned, follow along and believe in your transformation and when you do, you’ll start noticing big changes. I guarantee it.

Where Fear Resides

LIONbefearless.jpg

I’ve been writing a lot about change as it’s associated with our personal growth and there is much to be said on this subject, but for now I just wanted to drop a quick thought that occurred to me about it.

We’ve all heard about being fearless and taking risks that test our boundaries of comfort. We do things to gain strength and overcome the fear itself. But it occurred to me that the greatest fear that most people have is not something like asking someone out on a date, standing up for ourselves or merging into fast moving traffic. Our greatest fears lie in honestly confronting ourselves.

Confronting ourselves requires a dedication in wanting to make changes that we know deeply effect our thinking, reasoning and emotions. It means understanding ourselves better, it means addressing feelings and issues that may be uncomfortable and unpleasant.

We fear the secrets we keep buried deep down and if we’re honest, we know that by understanding our deeper selves some of our current beliefs and feelings will change. We instinctively know that a paradigm shift can be painful and disruptive, but in order to elevate ourselves and grow in a way that improves our lives and relationships, we must do that work.

So when we think about confronting our fears, let’s start with the big one and ask ourselves those hard questions. What is important? What is my purpose? Why do I feel the way I do? Why do I react the way I do? What really matters to me? Am I happy? Am I being honest with myself?

And always remember, you are never alone.

Are You Being Vampirized?

VAMPIRIZED

I had a dream last night about an old friend. He was my best friend for 5 or 6 years.   We worked on creative projects together, we were even roommates for a while. But something happened and our friendship devolved into an energy-sucking one-way street.

I had moved to the opposite coast and noticed that our telephone conversations were becoming more and more one-sided and would end when he was done saying everything he needed to say. This went on for some time until I finally explained that we couldn’t be friends anymore. We got off the phone and I haven’t spoken to him since.

This was a very good friend and one I’ve thought about over the years, wondering how he was and what he was up to. Even now, 20 years later, I’m dreaming about the guy, still not knowing how he is, but confident that ending the friendship that was going nowhere needed to happen.

You might think that if you are such good friends with someone like this that you can overlook certain character flaws and behaviors that always put you second to their needs, but good friends don’t do that.

I was only able to end this friendship because I had just gone through an experience where I understood how it’s possible to be victimized by a vampire. Of course, I’m not talking about the kind that cringe at the sight of crosses and avoid daylight, I’m talking about psychic vampires.

I had started a job where I was assigned an office, a closet really, a tiny little space that fit a 12′ table and two small cube-shaped Apple computers. I shared this space with someone I really liked. A funny guy, a writer who loved to talk, loved to share and share and share. After a couple of months I noticed how exhausted I was after work. The work itself was a breeze, but I’d leave work completely depleted of all energy.

It got to the point where I dreaded going into this closet office. I really liked this co-worker friend, but it was like being an audience of one to a stand-up comedian doing an 8-hour schtick. That was vampirism.

He got all of his needs met. He had a captive audience. He got the responses he wanted. He got admiration and I laughed at the right times. I didn’t even get a T-shirt out of it, but I did learn something about people and about myself. I learned that people need validation at any expense and I learned that sometimes you have to say good-bye to people you love.

In the dream I had last night, it was the first time I’d seen my friend since we stopped being friends 20 years ago. There was a vibe that that was the past and we’re here now.  I was shocked when he introduced me to his twin brother. There were now TWO of my friends in front of me. I wondered why he never told me he had a twin and when I woke up I wondered what it could mean. Perhaps it meant that he’s a different person now and we can be friends again. If he knocked on my front door, I’d certainly give him a hug and ask him in, but I’d find out if it was the new twin or the old friend.

Ending relationships that serve no purpose is not easy, but sometimes it’s necessary. And if we’re lucky, they will mend over time and we can pick up where we left off.
